Catskills Mountains

The Catskill Mountains are a normal mountain and park area in upstate New York between 1 and 3 hours northwest of New York City and just west of the Hudson River Valley. It is a mature plateau of the Allegheny Plateau and the area is a traditional vacation destination with numerous summer resorts and campgrounds. The Catskills Mountains have been successful with large-scale resorts, country-style inns and quaint lodges. In recent times, a few small-scale resorts have begun to cater to outdoor adventurers and winter snow sport enthusiasts.

The Catskill Mountains, a natural area in New York State northwest of New York City and southwest of Albany, are a mature dissected plateau, an uplifted region that was subsequently eroded into spiky relief. They are an eastward continuance and the highest representation, of the Allegheny Plateau. They are sometimes considered an extension of the Appalachian Mountains into Upstate New York, although they are not at all geologically related. The Catskills are west of the Hudson River and lie within the bounds of six counties. The Catskill Mountains are also considered a physiographic section of the larger Appalachian Plateau province, which in turn is actually part of the larger Appalachian physiographic division.
